Premise/Background:
This lesson plan is part of a larger unit on the Natural Environment in Wisconsin. This is the last lesson of the unit and requires the students to reflect upon previous knowledge and research from an animal that was previously discussed as being a part of Wisonsin's nature. They will use their research skills and previously learned technology skills to create this end of the year project.

Title:
Wisconsin Natural Environment Research Project

Description/Summary:
This lesson plan is the combination of what the Students have previously learned from the unit on the Wisconsin Environment taught at the school. This is mostly a science lesson, but combines the student's research knowledge and technology skills which were also taught previously this year. Students will choose an animal from Wisconsin that they would like to learn more about and create an iMovie to show what they have learned about the animal and what aspects they find most interesting. The iMovie will include still images, text, sound effects, and music. Students will also be responsible for submitting a treatment, storyboard and script for the iMovie.

Learner Analysis:
This fourth grade class consists of 20 students in an average sized urban school district. The students have a wide range of abilities, one child with ADHD and two children with learning disabilities.

Prerequisite Student Skills:
The students have knowledge and skills previously learned including:

They have spent the last 3 weeks learning about Wisconsin. In that time, they have learned about the natural environment and the animals that are included with that.

Instructional Objectives:

  1. Research information on the animal chosen from a variey of sources that can be used to present in the iMovie.
  2. Scan materials needed for the iMovie.
  3. Manipulate images in photoshop.
  4. Design a video production using still images, text, sound effects and music.
  5. Work as a group to complete this project on time. Develop time management skills and distribute work evenly.

Activity Sequence:

Day 1
1. Project is presented to the students.
2. Show the sample project created.
3. Assign the students to groups in which they will be working.
4. Discuss with groups any ideas they may have.
5. Assignment-decide on a topic by tomorrow.

Day 2
1. Discussion where students can present concerns and their ideas. Discuss the techniques they will need to use.
2. Discuss the policies for using the equipment.
3. Take students to the library with remaining time to research and discuss their project.
4. Assignment-treatment is due on Monday (Day 6)

Day 3
1. Discuss the storyboards and scripts. Show example of the storyboard and script written for the iMovie shown the day before.
2. Groups have time to work on treatment and do more research. Teacher meets with every group to answer any questions and point them in the right direction.
3. Assignment-Storyboard/script due Wednesday (Day 8)

Day 4
1. Groups are given the whole period to work on their treatment and storyboard/script. Teacher meets with every group to make sure they are on track and going to be finished by the deadlines.

Day 5
1. Have class in the computer lab to review iMovie.
2. Groups continue to work and plan.

Day 6
1. Teatment is due.
2. Groups present treatments to class and feedback is given. Teacher will provide written comments and suggestions to each group by Tuesday (Day 7)

Day 7
1. Return treatments and allow groups to meet, discuss and revise their plan.
2. Allow the students to experiment on iMovie and ask any questions they may have. Otherwise, they may continue to plan.

Day 8
1. Storyboard and script due. Groups may present questions or concerns they may have.
2. Groups may continue to plan.

Day 9
1.Return storyboard and script with comments and suggestions.
2. Teacher meets with each group to address any concers, questions or comments that may have arisen from the storyboard/script.

Day 10
1. Work day in computer lab.

Day 11
1. Work day in computer lab.

Day 12
1. Work day in computer lab.

Day 13
1. Movies presented and turned in on DVD.
