Title:
Wisconsin Natural Environment Research Project

Description/Summary:
This lesson plan is the culmination of the Wisconsin Environment unit. This is mostly a science lesson, but includes previously learned research and technology skills. Students will choose an animal from Wisconsin that they would like to learn more about and create an iMovie to show what they have learned about the animal and what aspects they find most interesting. The iMovie will include still images, text, sound effects, and music. Students will also be responsible for submitting a Powerpoint Presentation as an outline of their final project. If students have a special need which requires an alternate project these requirements will be adapted by the teacher.

Learner Analysis:
This fourth grade class consists of 20 students in an average sized urban school district. The students have a wide range of abilities, one child with ADHD and two children with learning disabilities.

Prerequisite Student Skills:
The students have knowledge and skills learned previously including:

They have spent the last 3 weeks learning about Wisconsin. In that time, they have learned about the natural environment and the animals.

Wisconsin Curriculum Standards Addressed:

Science

B.4.1 Use encyclopedias, source books, texts, computers, teachers, parents, other adults, journals, popular press, and various other sources, to help answer science-related questions and plan investigations

F.4.3 Illustrate the different ways that organisms grow through life stages and survive to produce new members of their type

C.4.1 Use the vocabulary of the unifying themes* to ask questions about objects, organisms, and events being studied

Information and Technology Literacy:

A.4.1 Use common media and technology terminoloy and equipment

A.4.5 Use media and technology to create and present information

B.4.7 Communicate the results of research and inquiry in an appropriate format

D.4.1 Participate productively in workgroups or other collaborative learning environments

Instructional Objectives:

  1. Research information on the animal chosen from a variey of sources that can be used as source material for an iMovie.
  2. Scan materials needed for the iMovie.
  3. Manipulate images in Photoshop.
  4. Design and produce a Powerpoint presentation demonstrating their ideas for their final project.
  5. Design and produce a video production using still images, text, sound effects and music.
  6. Use time management skills to finish the project on time and share responsibilities.
  7. Identify life cycle, eating habits, and habitat of animals native to Wisconsin.

List of Materials/Equipment:

  1. Computer lab
  2. Overhead
  3. Data projector
  4. Projection screen
  5. iMovie
  6. Photoshop
  7. Powerpoint
  8. iDVD
  9. iPhoto
  10. Editing equipment (microphones, TV/VCR, appropriate wires/cables, etc)
  11. Digital camara
  12. Scanner
  13. Zip disk/drive
  14. Paper, white board, markers, floppy disks

Prerequisite Teacher Skills

  1. Ability to operate equipment such as scanners and digital cameras
  2. Ability to use software required for designing Powerpoint presentations
  3. Ability to use software required for iMovie production: iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, Photoshop
  4. Knowledge of equipment needed to import/export audio and visual media

Activity Sequence:

Day 1
1. Project is presented to the students.
2. Show the sample project created.
3. Assign the students to groups in which they will be working.
4. Introduce the topic hotlist to students. Students will access the hotlist to generate ideas for their project
5. Discuss with groups any ideas they may have.
6 . Assignment-decide on a topic by tomorrow.

Day 2
1. Discussion where students can present concerns and their ideas. Discuss the techniques they will need to use.
2. Discuss the policies for using the equipment.
3. Take students to the library with remaining time to research and discuss their project.
4. Assignment-paragraph description of animal and one resource is due on Monday (Day 6)

Day 3
1. Discuss the Powerpoint presentation requirement. Students will be required to prepare a Powerpoint as an outline and organizational tool leading up to their iMovie. If students have special needs which require accomodation, adaptations may be made by the teacher. Show example of a Powerpoint presentation prepared for the iMovie shown the day before.
2. Groups have time to work on paragraph description and do more research. Teacher meets with every group to answer any questions and point them in the right direction.
3. Assignment-Powerpoint presentation due Wednesday (Day 8)

Day 4
1. Groups are given the whole period to work on the Powerpoint presentation. Teacher meets with every group to make sure they are on track and will be finished by the deadlines.

Day 5
1. Have class in the computer lab to review iMovie.
2. Groups continue to work and plan.

Day 6
1. Paragraph description and one source due.
2. Groups present paragraphs to class and feedback is given. Teacher will provide written comments and suggestions to each group by Tuesday (Day 7)

Day 7
1. Return paragraphs and allow groups to meet, discuss and revise their plan.
2. Allow the students to experiment with iMovie and ask any questions they may have. Otherwise, they may continue to plan.

Day 8
1. Powerpoint presentation due. Groups may present questions or concerns they may have.
2. Groups may continue to plan.

Day 9
1.Return grading sheet on Powerpoint presentation with comments and suggestions.
2. Teacher meets with each group to address any concerns, questions or comments that may have arisen from the Powerpoint presentation.

Day 10
1. Work day in computer lab.

Day 11
1. Work day in computer lab.

Day 12
1. Work day in computer lab.

Day 13
1. Movies presented and turned in on DVD.

Assessment/Evaluation

We will know if the students succeeded with this project if they were able to thoroughly convey their research findings about their particular animal through the use of iMovie. Success of the lesson will be evaluated by their ability to meet lesson objectives as part of a coopertive learning group. Students should be able to complete all aspects of this project fairly independently with minimal teacher assistance. If students seemed to fall behind or have difficulty, this lesson could be modified by increasing time limits and deadlines, incorporating review of previously learned computer skills, and break down the project into smaller lessons.
